MALCURA have been performing their exhilarating brand of acoustic fusion since 2013, honing their craft as buskers in Melbourne's Bourke Street Mall. Combining the technical ability and passion of Flamenco with Gypsy Jazz, Latin rhythms and a Rock'n'Roll mentality, Malcura have captivated the Australian public with their distinctive sound.
Driven by the dynamic and evocative lead-guitar playing of Joshua Voce and Jenna Campbell and backed by the powerful rhythm section of Simon Wood (Drums) and Colin Andrews (bass), Malcura create music for the soul; it's a feeling as much as it is a sound.
Their most recent release, "Flamenco Metal", pays respect to the band's origin story whilst setting its sights firmly on the future. To mark the addition of Colin Andrews to the band's line-up (on bass guitar), Malcura chose to re-record the first songs ever written by the band, this time with new instrumentation and polished production.
Malcura's 2nd album "Malcura II" included a distinctive cover of the “Gerudo Valley Theme” from Zelda. The track has recently passed 1 million streams on Spotify, with a street performance of the tune going viral on YouTube, amassing over 11 million views.
Featuring explorations of Gypsy Jazz, Swing, Surf Rock and Melodic Death Metal, Malcura build upon their signature “Heavy Flamenco” style, weaving through intricate arrangements with virtuoso musicianship and gusto.
Malcura II is an epic space odyssey. Each song is a chapter in the adventure. The CD and vinyl booklets include custom artwork for all 12 tracks, depicting the hero, 'Captain Snus' in his quest across a harsh galaxy.
Malcura's first album, the self-titled 'Malcura' was released in 2016 and has sold over 3000 copies. The record was nominated for “Best Global/Reggae Album” at The Age Music Victoria Awards, with songs such as 'Ini Mini', 'Palais' and 'Sunbird' remaining constants of the band's live performances.
Since 2023, the band has been joined on-stage and in the studio by emerging talent, Jenna Campbell. Performing as a four piece in 2024, Malcura has continued to perform for thrilled audiences all over Australia, returning to old haunts and making new friends along the way. Malcura are actively seeking opportunities to play their music for new audiences, and have their intentions set on an international tour in 2025.
Malcura are a festival favourite and a workhorse of a live band with an impressive gig history under their belt, including Illawarra Folk Festival, Byron Bay International Guitar Festival, Blue Mountains Music Festival, Mordi Fest and more.
Not to mention they've performed alongside Tash Sultana, Missy Higgins, Harry Manx (Canada) and even on stage with Rodrigo Y Gabriela at the Palais Theatre, which was met with a standing ovation by gig-goers.
Whether they're on-stage at a festival, starting dancefloors at the pub, tucked in-between two trailers at a market or serenading guests at a wedding, Malcura have a tenacious stage presence and continue to delight audiences (or so they tell us).
